Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek

Sep 28, 2025

Sports talk can take 15 seconds or 15 minutes. You get to call the shots in small talk and if you have a limited amount of time - set the expectation up front.

For example: "I only have time for a quick comment, what did you think about the game Sunday?" or you could say something like "I have to get back upstairs for a minute in five minutes, but what's your prediction for this week?"

Frame the conversation however you'd like and use these topics to get the ball rolling.

NFL

Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson hasn't missed a game since he was sidelined with a knee injury at the end of the 2022 season, but Jackson injured his hamstring and didn't finish the game against Kansas City. Four other Baltimore starters left the game Sunday with injuries and the defense was already without four staters. Baltimore is 1-3 while Kansas City is 2-2.

NCAA

Chaotic might be the best way to describe the week of college football. It's the first time three Top 5 teams have lost this early in the season since 2008 which means there are some changes in the rankings. Ohio State stays at No. 1 while Oregon moves up to No. 2 followed by Miami, Ole Miss and Oklahoma.

MLB

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh finished the regular season with 60 home runs, the most in baseball this season. He's just the 7th player in MLB history to hit 60+ homers in a single season. The Wild Card round of the playoffs start Tuesday and the Division Series for both the American League and National League start Saturday.

WNBA Playoffs

The Minnesota Lynx were the No. 1 overall seed in the WNBA playoffs, but were ousted Sunday night by the Phoenix Mercury. The Mercury advance to the WNBA Finals for the first time in four years and are attempting to win their first title since 2014.

Ryder Cup

The Europeans staved off a USA comeback Sunday to win the Ryder Cup. The Americans faced an 11.5-4.5 deficit Saturday before fighting back Sunday. The Europeans ultimately won 15-13.
