Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek
May 03, 2026
Studies show we’re all talking less than we used to which in and of itself might not seem like a big deal. But it’s not just the words and interactions we’re missing, it’s the tone, facial expressions and body language that give conversations context. All of that means we’re also at greater risk for misunderstandings.
Reversing the trend can start with small talk and these sports topics can help with something to say this week
MLB
May is when the trends become real in baseball with a sample size of more than a month of games. You don’t need more games to know the New York Mets own the worst record in baseball and are off to their worst start in more than 40 years.
NBA
The next round of the NBA playoffs starts Monday, but the story of the weekend was the Philadelphia 76ers knocking off the Boston Celtics. At one point the Sixers trailed 3-1 in the series. It was the Sixers first playoff series win against Celtics since 1982 and the first Game 7 win for Sixers star Joel Embiid who returned from an emergency appendectomy.
WNBA
The 30th WNBA season tips off Friday with a triple-header of games. The Las Vegas Aces are the defending WNBA Champions and looking to defend their title.
NHL
The Stanley Cup playoffs move into the second round and for the first time since 2007 the Buffalo Sabres are in the mix.
Kentucky Derby
Golden Tempo won the Kentucky Derby by edging out Renegade with a strong finish. The win made history for Cherie DeVaux who is the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner. All eyes will be on Golden Tempo heading into the Preakness in two weeks. There has not been a Triple Crown winner since 2018.
