Sports Conversation Starters for Your Week

conversation starters Apr 19, 2026

The role of small talk is an important one in conversations. It might also be your least favorite part, but skipping it altogether could be more awkward than the 30 seconds you spend talking about the weather. That's because small talk is the warm up. It's a conversational norm and it's a quick building block that leads into something more substantial - as long as you're prepared for what comes next.

And that's where these sports topics come in. You can use them to start the conversation or transition to the next part of the conversation. It's a chance to be prepared and make small talk a little less awkward and more productive this week.

NFL

The NFL Draft takes place Thursday through Saturday in Pittsburgh. The Vegas Raiders are expected to select Heisman-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick.

It's the longest losing streak for the Mets since 2004. Since 1969 only three teams have made the playoffs after a double-digit losing streak.

LeBron dished out 13 assists passing John Stockton as the oldest player in NBA history to tally 10 or more assists in a playoff game. He and his son Bronny also became the first father-son duo to play in the same playoff game in NBA history.

WNBA
