Sports Conversation Starters for Your Week

conversation starters May 24, 2026

It's a Monday for remembering and reflecting. While I am not spending today at a ballpark, I always loved working on days like this - when we celebrated the people who made it possible to enjoy a game with friends.

I hope that's part of what your Monday includes as well. When you get back to work, or need a couple additional conversation starters to keep the ball rolling, here are a few ideas...

French Open

The French Open is underway. On the men's side  Jannik Sinner is a clear favorite without 2-time defending French Open Champion Carlos Alcaraz in the field. Sinner can complete a career Grand Slam with a win at Roland Garros. On the women's side Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are co-favorites, although that might not matter much because the last five Grand Slams have been won by different women.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter: Do you anyone, possibly Novak Djokovic, could challenge Sinner or is Sinner poised to steamroll the competition?

NBA

The New York Knicks can close out the series against Cleveland Monday night and advance to the NBA Finals. The Knicks hold a 3-0 lead in the series. No NBA team has ever blown a 3-0 lead.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter: The Knicks have won 10 straight playoff games and have won 10 postseason games by double digits. What impresses you most about their ability to dominate opponents at this point in the season?

NHL

The Las Vegas Knights jumped out to a series lead against the Colorado Avalanche. It's somewhat surprising considering the Avs are the Presidents Cup Trophy winners, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. It's prompting some fans to wonder if the Presidents Cup Trophy curse is catching up to Colorado. It's been more than 10 years since the team with the best regular season record went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter: Do you believe in sports curses? What do you make of Colorado's early struggles against Vegas?

NFL

Most of the NFL will be holding Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this week. Mandatory mini camps will take place the first couple weeks of June.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter: Are you paying attention to your favorite NFL team at this point in the year or is it too early to talk about football?
