Sports Conversation Starters for Your Week

conversation starters Aug 02, 2026

As fun as it can be to talk about weekend adventures, there's probably only so much interest in listening to those stories by Tuesday. I'm not saying you shouldn't ask or that you shouldn't take an interest, but do you want to have multiple conversations about a three-day soccer tournament for 12-year-olds when you don't have any kids?

When you're ready to change the subject and send things going in a different direction your sports fandom can come to the rescue and these conversation starters can help.

MLB

The Trade Deadline is Monday at 6pm ET, but the biggest move took place Saturday night when the Detroit Tigers traded 2-time Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal to the LA Dodgers. The Dodgers have won two straight World Series titles and already have the largest payroll in baseball.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

  • Is there such a thing as too much talent on one roster?
  • What do you think of the moves your team made?

NFL

The first NFL preseason game takes place this week. The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers play in the Hall of Fame Game Thursday. It's part of the Hall of Fame festivities that include five new members being inducted into the Hall of Fame Saturday evening. The rest of the NFL will play pre-season games next week.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

  • How much stock, if any, do you place in pre-season games?

WNBA

Sunday's WNBA trade deadline was highlighted by a blockbuster trade between the LA Sparks and Phoenix Mercury. The Sparks sent 5-time All-Star guard Kelsey Plum to Phoenix marking just the fourth time in WNBA history an active All-Star has been traded midseason.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

  • What impact would you expect the trade to have for the Mercury, who still have low odds to make the playoffs?

Women's British Open

Shiho Kuwaki won the women's British Open and claimed her first major title. All eyes had been on Haeran Ryu who was seeking an unprecedented third straight major championship in a row. She finished tied for sixth.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

  • Do you think you'd feel more pressure to capture the first title of your career or to repeat as a title-winner?
