Sports Conversation Starters for Your Week

conversation starters Sep 13, 2026

I'm not sure why, but small talk occupied a decent amount of my dreams last night. I recall a very passionate debate (or maybe it was a soliloquy) on the importance of being prepared for small talk.

I don't know where that came from, but I don't disagree with the premise. It's why I'm encouraging you to use these sports topics and conversation starters in interactions this week.

NFL

The regular season opened with a full slate a game and a number of significant injuries including Super Bowl winning quarterback Sam Darnold. They're guaranteed to contribute to the overreactions after Week 1.

  • When evaluating Week 1 injuries, what level of confidence do you have in your team's contingency plans, as in their back up players?

NCAA

The preseason No. 1 and No. 2 teams were both upset over the weekend. Ohio State dropped from the top spot to No. 6 in the rankings following a 20-point comeback by Texas. It's first time the Buckeyes have been ranked outside the Top 5 in two years. The Longhorns are now the top-ranked team in the rankings. Oregon avoided the upset last week, but couldn't do the same against Oklahoma State. The preseason No. 2 team dropped to No. 21.

  • Which upset was the most surprising to you? Which outcome was the most expected?

US Open

Elena Rybakina defeated Aryna Sabalenka and ended her bid for a third straight US Open title. It's the second Grand Slam title for Rybakina this year. She previously won the Australian Open by also defeating Sabalenka.

On the men's side, Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton to win his second major championship, becoming the fourth man in the Open era to win his first two major titles in the same year.

  • The environment at the US Open is known for being raucous. Do you prefer loud, energetic support of your goals or a more subtle, quiet support?

FIBA World Cup

Team USA defeated France in the FIBA World Cup gold medal game to claim their fifth straight women's World Cup title.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

  • It was the second youngest team the US has sent to a World Cup. What does their win and success indicate about the state of women's basketball in the US?
