Sports Conversation Starters for Your Week

If you're lucky summer weekends can be a bit of wash, rinse, repeat. Meaning you're doing similar activities every weekend (hopefully they include sunshine and water) and when asked the question "How was your weekend?" there's not much variation in your response. If you enjoy your weekend activities there's nothing wrong with that, but it does make small talk more challenging. 

That's where these sports topics and questions come into play. There's always something new to talk about and you can take the conversation in any number of directions. 

British Open

The British Open takes place in Southport, England. It's the final golf major of the year. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are favorites to win, but Scheffler is coming off a weekend in which he missed the cut for the first time since 2022. It was the fifth longest streak in PGA history. Americans have won the last three British Opens, including Scheffler last year.

Wimbledon

Jannik Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev to win back-to-back Wimbledon titles. It's the first time Sinner won a match that exceeded 3 hours and 50 minutes.

On the women's side, 21-year-old Linda Noskova defeated Karolina Muchova. The two women are not only friends they were doubles partners in the Olympics in 2024. It's the second consecutive Grand Slam this year won by a player 21 years of age or younger.

World Cup

Just four teams remain in the World Cup bracket which means we'll have a champion in less than a week. The quarterfinal matchups are: France vs. Spain and England vs. Argentina. France and Spain have been considered title favorites throughout the tournament. Argentina is the reigning world champs.

MLB 

The All-Star game takes place Wednesday in Philadelphia and fans won't see Shohei Ohtani play despite being the top overall vote-getter this year. The Dodgers two-way star is dealing with a knee issue and will use the All-Star break to rest and get ready for the second half of the season. The Home Run Derby takes place Tuesday and includes two Phillies teammates for the first time ever in Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.
