Sports Conversation Starters for Your Week
Oct 11, 2026
"Why has no one ever explained football like that before?"
It was a question I fielded from a gal last week who was preparing to attend her first football game. She was overwhelmed by all the information she thought she needed to learn before accompanying her boyfriend to the game.
I told her to forget about the rules and focus on a few details that she could remember and felt comfortable talking about. I helped her craft her talking points and explained how to get the most out of a game without studying a rule book.
Understanding the rules and talking about specific strategies is one way to be a sports fan and engage in sports conversations - but it's not the only way. You get to choose how you contribute and how much you learn. Sometimes all you need is a few talking points like the ones listed below to get started.
NFL
There are still three unbeaten teams through five weeks of the NFL season and three winless teams, there are also an incredible amount of close games. In fact there have been more games decided by one score through the first five weeks of a season than ever before.

- What do you make of the close games this season?
- Which of the winless teams (Miami, LA Chargers, Tennessee) is most surprising to you?
NCAA
Texas lost their No. 1 ranking in the polls after a stunning loss to unranked Oklahoma. The Sooners scored on offense, defense and special teams in a 27-24 win. The Texas loss combined with Georgia's win over Alabama moves the Bulldogs to the top spot in the rankings.
Talk Sporty Convo Starter:
- What does Oklahoma's win do to silence critics who were unhappy with the Sooners start to the season?
MLB
The Cleveland Guardians advanced to the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays after ripping off three straight wins against the Chicago White Sox to close out the ALDS. That series starts Monday. In the National League, the LA Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers will vie for a trip to the World Series.
Talk Sporty Convo Starter:
- In the NLCS, the 2-time defending World Series Champion Dodgers boast the highest payroll in baseball while the Brewers rank 19th out of 30 teams. Does that have any impact on who you cheer for or who you believe will win?
WNBA
The WNBA champion will be a first-time winner. The Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream both swept their previous series. For the Valkyries that meant ousting the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. Game 1 of the WNBA Finals is Saturday.
Talk Sporty Convo Starter:
- What is the biggest reason for Golden State's success just two years into their existence as a franchise?
NHL
Alexander Ovechkin recently announced he will retire after this year, his 22nd in the NHL. He already holds several records, including the all-time record for regular season goals but still has a few more records within reach this season. He needs just 11 more goals to surpass Wayne Gretzky for the most combined goals (regular season + playoffs.)
Talk Sporty Convo Starter:
- What kind of impact do you think Ovi will be able to make this year?
