Sports Conversation Starters for Your Week

conversation starters Jul 19, 2026

Every conversation is an act of bravery, because there's no way of predicting what someone will say or how they'll respond.

Being prepared is the vote of confidence that leads to bravery and connections.

These sports topics and conversation starters can help with that this week.

World Cup

Spain scored in extra time to clinch a 1-0 win over Argentina. It's the second World Cup title for Spain and the first since 2010. Argentina was trying to defend the title they won four years ago, but didn't muster a shot on goal during the first 90 minutes of play. Their loss also marks the end of Lionel Messi's World Cup career.

Talk Sporty Convo Starters:

Where did you watch the World Cup Final?

What do you make of how the match played out?

What legacies were cemented during this World Cup?

British Open

Ryan Fox won the British Open, otherwise known as the Open Championship. It's the first career major win for the New Zealander. At 39-years-old, he's the third-oldest major winner in the last 10 years.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

Fox sunk four birdies in his last six holes. How would you rate Fox's play down the stretch to clinch the win?

MLB

The Boston Red Sox enter the week as the hottest team in baseball. Boston has won 13 games in a row, the longest streak for the franchise since 1948. It's a remarkable mid-season turnaround for a team that struggled most of the first half.

Talk Sporty Convo Starters:

How does the Red Sox success affect the upcoming trade deadline?

Now that we're past the All-Star break, how would you evaluate your team and their chances of making the playoffs?

NFL

NFL Training camps start this week. All 32 teams will report to their respective facilities between July 22 and 28. The Hall of Fame Game, the first preseason game of the year, takes place August 6 in Canton Ohio.
