Sports Conversation Starters for Your Week

October is the best and busiest month of the year for sports, in my opinion. It also happens to be a busy month in general before the holidays.

If you're not watching all of the playoff games and sporting events taking place this month, that's okay. There are plenty of sports fans who can help you fill in the blanks and tell you what you missed. You just have to be willing to say something like, "My schedule is packed and I haven't had any time to watch [insert team/sport] what should I know?"

Being an active listener is one way to participate in a conversation and you'll likely make someone's day by giving them an opportunity to use their fandom in a conversation.

Just a reminder, I'm hosting a free 30-minute session this week: Football Conversations Made Easy. Join me Tuesday October 6 at Noon PT and learn all the tricks of the trade for talking about the game without watching every snap (or even any of the snaps.) [Register Here]

NFL

Through four weeks of the NFL regular season there are three unbeaten teams remaining: Minnesota, Kansas City and San Francisco.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

• Which of these teams is the most well-rounded?
• Which team will extend its unbeaten streak the longest?

NCAA

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith continues to impress this season. He set Ohio State records for most career receptions and receiving touchdowns in the Buckeyes win over Iowa.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

• He struck the Heisman pose after scoring a touchdown Saturday. He is the front-runner for the award given out at the end of the season. Who else belongs in the conversation?

WNBA

We're in the semifinal series of the WNBA playoffs. The top-seeded Minnesota Lynx were ousted last week. No. 3 seeded Las Vegas Aces are favored to make it to the Finals, but they trail Golden State 1-0 in the best-of-five series. Atlanta leads New York in their semifinal series.  The Finals start October 17.

Talk Sporty Convo Starter:

• Which teams do you predict will advance to the Finals?

MLB

We will know the teams that advance to the Championship Series by the end of the week. In the American League, the Chicago White Sox hold a 1-0 lead over Cleveland and Tampa Bay leads the Yankees 1-0 in their series. In the National League the two-time defending World Series Champion LA Dodgers and Atlanta Braves are tied at a game apiece and the Milwaukee Brewers hold a 2-0 lead over San Diego. This round is a best-of-five series so the first team to three wins advances.

• What do you like about the division matchups? Are the playoffs playing out like you expected?
