Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek
Oct 05, 2025
I love a good sports adjacent topic, especially if it involves champagne.
Let's back up for just a second so I can offer this reminder - sports talk can encompass more than just stats, scores and outcomes. There are a number of topics that come up in the course of sports conversations because every game is actually an event. Use that to your advantage in thinking of adjacent topics like food, travel and entertainment.
Now let's get back to the champagne... members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins team are popping champagne because there are no undefeated teams remaining in the NFL (see the conversation starter below) which means they're still celebrating their perfect season.
Pop the champagne and get the ball rolling with sports talk this week!
NFL
There are no unbeaten teams remaining in the NFL. That's because the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Denver Broncos and the Buffalo Bills lost to the Patriots. The 1972 Dolphins remain the only team in NFL history to complete a perfect season (regular and post-season.)
NCAA
The biggest upset of the weekend belongs to UCLA. The unranked Bruins were 25-point underdogs heading into the game against Penn State - and they knocked off the No. 7 ranked Nittany Lions 42-37. UCLA had not held a lead in any game this season prior to Saturday. As a result of the loss Penn State drops out of the Top 25 altogether. Preseason favorite Texas also dropped out of the Top 25.
MLB
In the ALDS matchups, the Toronto Blue Jays hold a 2-0 lead over the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners are tied 1-1. The best-of-five series continues Tuesday. Meanwhile Game 2 of the National League Division Series will be played Monday.
WNBA Playoffs
The Las Vegas Aces lead the Phoenix Mercury 2-0 in the WNBA Finals. The best-of-seven series shifts to Phoenix for the next two games. The series resumes on Wednesday.
NHL
Recent preseason games between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning were heated and chippy. The teams combined for over 100 penalties for nearly 500 minutes over the last two preseason games. It's a good thing the regular season starts Tuesday. Florida, the reigning Stanley Cup Champions - is part of a triple header that includes raising their second consecutive Stanley Cup banner.
