Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek

conversation starters Sep 14, 2025

We're trying a new format to make it even easier to catch up on a handful of sports topics that could be useful in small talk this week. Every week I curate this list - without the help of AI - because I'm in these conversations with fans. I know what people are talking about and I want to make sure you can join the conversation.

This is not a comprehensive list (that would be exhausting) and the short description doesn't cover every detail (that would be too much) but it is just enough information that you can contribute a fact or detail and stay up to speed on topics that are making headlines with sports fans.

NFL

Week 2 of the NFL regular featured a Super Bowl rematch between Philadelphia and Kansas City. The Eagles came out on top again 20-17. Philadelphia improves to 2-0 while Kansas City drops to 0-2 to start the season.

NCAA

There were a number of big games and close wins in college football, including No. 6 Georgia defeating No. 15 Tennessee 44-41 in overtime. And No. 16 Texas A&M improved to 3-0 and beat a ranked opponent on the road for the first time since 2014 when they edged No. 8 Notre Dame 41-40

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers, owners of the best record in baseball, became the first team to clinch a playoff spot. There are two weeks remaining in the regular season.

WNBA Playoffs

The WNBA playoffs are underway. The top-seeded Minnesota Lynx are favored to win. Many are predicting a Finals matchup against the Las Vegas Aces. If that happens it would be an epic showdown between MVP candidates Napheesa Collier and A'ja Wilson.

NHL

The NHL preseason begins this week and will cover 15 days of games throughout the league. The regular season starts October 7.
