Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek
Sep 21, 2025
You already know that I think sports topics are the best way to break the ice and get a little banter and conversation going with colleagues.
Here’s what else happens during those conversations - you’re practicing listening, reading the room and responding thoughtfully. That’s what turns small talk into real connection.
With that in mind here are a few sports topics you can use this week.
NFL
The most surprising outcome of the weekend belongs to the Cleveland Browns who upset the Green Bay Packers Sunday. The Browns rallied from a 10- point deficit in the final four minutes, blocked a field goal and hit a 55-yard field goal to win. It was the first win of the season for Cleveland.
NCAA
Three of the Top 5 teams were idle this weekend. Illinois and Indiana was billed as a big game, but turned out to be a blowout. No. 19 Indiana destroyed No. 9 Illinois 63-10.
MLB
It's the final week of the regular season and there's still a lot to decide in the American League. The Seattle Mariners are the hottest team in the playoff race heading down the stretch and Cal Raleigh continues to mash baseballs at an impressive rate. The catcher has already set a new franchise record for most homers in a season passing Ken Griffey Jr and is trying to lock up AL MVP.
WNBA Playoffs
The WNBA MVP Award goes to A'ja Wilson for the fourth time. In the process, the Las Vegas Aces star becomes the first 4-time MVP in WNBA history. The Aces are playing in the semifinals for a seventh consecutive year.
Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup takes place this week in New York at Bethpage Black. Keegan Bradley is the captain of the American team. At 39 years old he is the youngest American Ryder Cup Team Captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. There was some talk of Bradley also playing in the matches but he left himself off the team.
