Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek
Mar 08, 2026
After months of dreary afternoons and dark mornings, there's daylight! If you live in the Pacific Northwest like I do, you know just how exciting this is. Sure, I lost an hour of sleep but I've gained so much sunlight I don't care.
The time change might be your entry point into small talk this week (be prepared for potentially strong opinions) but I think I'm still going to stick to sports because I know sports conversations create more opportunities for follow up conversations.
If you're looking to take your conversations to a championship level, you can join me for a free webinar on Championship Conversations: How Connected Teams Win Wednesday, March 18 at noon PT. I'll share insights and observations about the 2025 Seahawks that are applicable to your team at work. [Register here]
And with that, let's get to the rest of the topics that could make small talk easier this week.
NFL
NFL free agency officially opens Wednesday which is also the start of the new league year. That is when all of the reported deals can become official.
World Baseball Classic
Team USA and Team Mexico meet Monday night in one of the most hyped matchups in Pool B for the World Baseball Classic. Mexico has won three of the last four matchups against Team USA in WBC events.
NBA
Jayson Tatum returned to the Boston Celtics, 10 months after an Achilles injury. The Celtics remade the roster after his injury, but have been one of the biggest surprises this season. They own the second best record in the Eastern Conference.
College Hoops
Get your bracket strategy dialed in, because Selection Sunday is just days away.
On the men's side: Michigan, Duke, Arizona and UConn are the projected No. 1 seeds.
On the women's side: UConn, UCLA, South Carolina and Texas are the projected top seeds.
NASCAR
For the first time this NASCAR season someone other than Tyler Reddick won a race. Ryan Blaney won at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday.
Formula 1
While we're on the subject of cars that go very fast, the Formula 1 season is underway. The cars look similar but the engine design has changed which will cause drivers to make different decisions during races. George Russell navigated those decisions well, winning the season-opener Australian Grand Prix from the pole.
