Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek

conversation starters Oct 27, 2025

After a weekend with my family I am once again convinced that my mother is the most unlikely sports radio listener you'd ever meet. When I was a kid she watched countless hours of sports practices and games between me and my brother, but sports radio was not her thing. These days, she's dialed in.

Most people wouldn't think to engage my mom in a sports conversation, but they'd be missing out. It's just a reminder that sports fans come in all forms so be careful about making assumptions and don't leave people out of the conversation.

Just get the ball rolling and let them take it from there. These sports topics can help with that.

NFL

The New York Jets got their first win of the season Sunday against Cincinnati thanks to one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history. Prior to Sunday they were the only team in the NFL without a win.

NCAA

The first College Football Playoff rankings come out next week. Look for unbeaten Texas A&M to be among the top teams. The No. 3 Aggies destroyed No. 20 LSU Saturday and are in position to be one of six new Playoff teams this year.

MLB

The LA Dodgers evened the World Series matchup against Toronto thanks to a second straight complete game by Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Each team has won a game apiece. The series shifts to Los Angeles for Games 3-5 starting Monday.

NBA

Luka Doncic set a Lakers franchise record by scoring 92 points in the first two games of the season. He's the fourth player in NBA history with consecutive 40-point games to start the season. Doncic is also expected to be sidelined for a least a week with injuries. That's added to the fact that LeBron James is also out due to sciatica with no timeline to return.

NHL

Washington's Alexander Ovechkin played in his 1,500th game with the Capitals Saturday becoming just the 8th player in NHL history to reach that milestone with one franchise. He's about to reach another milestone as he sits on 899 career goals.
