Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek
Nov 16, 2025
The best way to start a sports conversation is to start where you are.
There’s no requirement for games watched, hours invested or years as a fan. Jump in right where you are and level set the conversation from the beginning. For example you could say something like “I haven’t watched many NFL games this year, what’s the biggest surprise so far?”
It's not about how much you know, it's about the connections you make. These sports topics can help with that this week.
NFL
Since I mentioned the matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and LA Rams last week, here's your update - the Rams won 21-19 to take control of the NFC West. Meanwhile the Denver Broncos defeated the Kansas City Chiefs to take a two-game lead in the AFC West. The Chiefs have won the division 9 years in a row, but that streak is in jeopardy as they are just 5-5 this season.
NCAA Football
Texas A&M staged the biggest comeback in school history Saturday against South Carolina. The Aggies rallied from a 27 point deficit at halftime to win 31-30 and remain unbeaten. Just how crazy was the comeback? Prior to Saturday teams trailing in SEC games by 27 points or more were 0-286 since 2004.
We're about three weeks away from conference championship games and then the College Football Playoff field will be set.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons have won 9 straight games for the first time in 17 years. They own the best record in the Eastern Conference. The defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder lead the Western Conference and the New Orleans Pelicans already made a coaching change after a 2-10 start.
LeBron James is expected to practice with the Lakers on Monday. He has yet to play in a game this season due to sciatica, but he could play as early as Tuesday.
MLB
All of the awards have been handed out which means it's "hot stove season." It's the time of year between the end of the season and the beginning of Spring Training where trades are made and free agents are signed. Spring Training games between February 20 with players reporting to their Spring Training complexes in early February.
