Sports Conversation Starters for Your Workweek

Dreading small talk won’t make it disappear but it could make it more awkward. Relationships are built on small interactions, the low stakes moments that help you get to a place where you can share more of the “real” stuff.
It’s not a necessary evil as much as it’s necessary in building relationships. I usually start with sports which is why I’ll be leaning on this list of sports topics this week.
MLB
It was a World Series for the ages that resulted in the LA Dodgers winning Game 7 against Toronto in extra innings and repeating as World Series champions. Last week we noted Yoshinobu Yamamoto had thrown back-to-back complete games in the playoffs (one against Toronto.) His legendary status was cemented in Game 6 and 7. He started and won Game 6. The very next night he pitched three scoreless innings in relief. It's no surprise he was named World Series MVP.
NFL
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday. At one point about a month ago it looked like we could see the most active trade deadline in recent years. There has been a small increase in trades over the last week but not involving big names. Miami, New Orleans, Tennessee, Las Vegas, Cleveland and the NY Jets could be among the most active based on losing records and where they are in the standings.
NCAA
No. 8 Georgia Tech suffered is first loss of the season, falling to NC State 48-36. The Yellow Jackets were one of two Top 10 teams to lose Saturday. SMU defeated No. 10 Miami in overtime. It's a bad time for a loss as the first College Football Playoff rankings come out this week.
NBA
Luka Doncic missed three games with a sprained finger and then picked up where he left off with another 40-point game. He joins Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in NBA history to start the season by scoring 40 or more points in their first three games. In case you're wondering, Wilt holds the record with 7 straight 40-point games to start a season.
NHL
Washington's Alexander Ovechkin is still seeking his 900th career goal. He's off to one slowest starts in his career having scored just two goals in 12 games this season. The Caps are back in action Wednesday.
